Altrincham History SocietyCharity 1116779WelcomeNext (use the 'Next' button to see all pages)Welcome to Altrincham History Society which was founded in 1988. Its aims are to further the study of the local history of the Altrincham area and to communicate such findings to the community at large. Altrincham is a town of 40,000 and lies eight miles to the south-west of Manchester in north Cheshire, see map. The area is noted for its many historical sites such as Dunham Massey (National Trust), Tatton Hall, the Bridgewater Canal and early railways. Altrincham is an interesting example of a medieval chartered borough (AD1290) which later became a centre for engineering. There is easy access to the Manchester region with its great Ship Canal, the industries of Trafford Park and the city itself with many historic sites and museums such as the North West Museum of Science and Industry. History Society meetings will be held in Council Chamber in the Town Hall, Market Street from September 2010. Talks are from September to May, usually on the second Tuesday of the month, with invited speakers mainly on local interests (see Events). Two or three outings are arranged each year. Subscriptions are £8 per year (£15 for a couple) which covers eight talks with a Christmas party in a lighter vein. We have about 100 members currently. The Chairman is Miss Hazel Pryor. The society belongs to the Cheshire Local History Association and the British Association for Local History. It publishes a journal each year and several members have written books about the area. Further details of the society may be obtained from the Secretary by email at althistsoc@btinternet.com or by completing the membership application form.
