Visits for 2010

Cuckoo Land There was a visit to Cuckooland on Wednesday 17th February 2010 at 2pm when 10 members attended. We were given excellent value for money by Roman and Maz Piekarski who own over 600 antique cuckoo clocks there, the largest collection in the world, together with five fairground organs and some motorbikes. They are also recognised as the world experts on antique cuckoo clocks. Roman and Maz went to St Vincent’s School and Blessed Thomas Halford. They trained as clock-makers in Manchester and in 1989 moved to the near-derelict school at Tabley which was then part of the Tabley Estate., and began to set up the cuckoo clock collection. The building is listed and is little changed since it was a school. It now belongs to the Crown. There is a large car park at the back of the property which is opposite to Tabley Park. Access from Altrincham should not be attempted by a right-turn off the Chester Road. The site is best approached by turning right towards Pickmere just after the M6 at the Windmill pub and taking the next left (Flittogate Lane) back onto the Chester Road, turning left there with care and taking the next left into Cuckooland. Failing that go to the Northwich roundabout and come back. Do arrange to car-share.

Castlefield There will be a visit to Castlefield on Wednesday 28 April with Terry Wyke from MMU. We will meet at the Museum of Science and Industry at 2.00 pm and the visit will last about two hours finishing with refreshments in the museum for those who want to stay and chat for a while.
